A calf that was born with smiley face markings on its aspect is to be spared the abattoir.

The black and white Holstein calf, born this week on a farm in Australia, can now sit up for a future as “a lawnmower”, its house owners say.

The calf has been nicknamed Joyful due to its markings, which resemble two eyes, a nostril and a smile.

The markings have been first observed by farmer Barry Coster when he was doing the rounds of his farm close to the city of Ripplebrook, within the state of Victoria.

He and his spouse Megan breed round 700 calves a yr on the stud farm.

The weird markings have secured Joyful a nice future as a pet.

“We have seen some quantity sevens or love hearts on the top and some unusual markings, however we have by no means seen something that resembles a smiley face earlier than,” Mrs Coster informed the Australian Broadcasting Company.
